Unshoes Forager – A Mini Review

I stumbled into Unshoes Foragers models as a secondary buy. They were basically new, unworn, and a great deal… why not?

The Forager is a leather moccasin with a Vibram sole and it comes in Brown, Black, and the Grey you see here, with black and grey costing $86 and the brown coming in at $90. This is a slightly expanded version of the original Instagram mini review. You can also see these shoes in an IGTV look and on YouTube.

Technical details of the grey model:

  • 4mm rubber sole, suede layer, and insole for a stack height of approximately 8 mm
  • Suede upper with moccasin stitching
  • Shoes are made in the USA
  • Fit is adjustable with elastic lacing that sits inside the collar of the back half of the shoe

Pros:

  • Foot. Hugs. I cannot stress enough how much I love, love, love these foot hugs. I don’t wear house shoes, y’all. I hardly even wear socks in the house. But I wear these in the house all the time just because they feel good.
  • Soft suede that feels so lovely against my skin. I never get tired of slipping these things on.
  • Complete flexiblity in all directions, even flipping the shoes backward. My feet don’t have to fight these shoes at all.
  • Adjustability. I have high volume, someone else has low, and we can both wear the shoe thanks to the elastic that runs through the back. That’s pretty cool to have cross-over like that.
  • Hands. Free. Entry. The collar of the shoe is structure enough to let me literally slip them on and go. Happy Mom/Busy Woman #shoegoals.

Cons:

  • The back may sag and drag with a lot of outdoor/pavement wear. I can’t say personally because I instantly made these houseshoes and my Terra Vidas the going-out version. But it’s possible with the thick part at the back. Plenty of people wear them out and about though, so it must not be too big of a thing.
  • Shape, as with most shoes, determines how they fit your foot. My shape is not an exact match, so I have some extra space in front of my first toes and my fourth toe bumps sometimes, same as it does with Mukis and others. Shape is so important to your love or dislike of any shoe.
  • The stitching between the sides and the top: That cord is strong and it looks good, but it’s STRONG and it doesn’t make friends easily. That could take some getting used to. You’re not actually touching the cord, but it’s holding the 2 parts together tightly and that makes for a pretty firm ridge going around the shoe. Update from original posting: If this bothers you at the beginning, I don’t think it will later.

Personal Thoughts:

I never actually intended to buy this shoe. It’s more masculine that I want with my already large feet, but it was a resale and I snapped it up. I’m so glad I did! These feel wonderful. If I could, I’d have a shape that perfectly matches my foot, but otherwise, I love them as they are.
