FeetSutra Khussa – A Full Review

Slip-on barefoot shoes are a favorite of mine. I have a whole list here going into options and have several reviews of different ones (even if they didn’t work). Time and again in my barefoot shoes journey I circle back to slip-ons. Even after this, I have more to review, including one I haven’t shown at all yet. #neverenoughtime

Usually, slip-ons go one way or the other: casual or dressy. In this case, with the Khussa from FeetSutra, you can do both! Read on to see if they will work for you.

Disclaimer: FeetSutra sent these to me for review but all thoughts are my own. I am an affiliate, which means that if you use the available discount code OWBSHOES to save 10% a small portion will be returned to me to support the blog and it won’t cost you anything extra.

Company Information

FeetSutra is a start-up with a great mission – “to change the conventional footwear choice that people make” and I’m glad that they’re a part of our barefoot shoes arena, but also that they understand that they’re not just serving our wants, but looking to make an impact on people as a whole, to get everyone into great shoes. This is bigger than us, y’all. Nearly everyone would benefit from barefoot shoes.

Technical Specifications

  • Model: Khussa (Men’s version tested)
  • Upper: Leather
  • Insole: Leather
  • Outsole: TPR (manufactured rubber)
  • Sizes: 6-11 women’s and 7-13 men’s
  • Available in this brown and a black version, in both women’s and men’s sizing

Appearance

The Khussa model is crafted based on inspiration from traditional Indian shoes such as Mochi loafers, but with all the barefoot shoes goods we want and need, including a wide toe box and zero drop, thin sole. They are a smooth leather and very soft. Maybe the softest shoe I’ve ever had, even topping the Nimbus from Mukishoes. But I’m digressing, as that’s more the fit, which I’ll discuss below.

Appearance sparks some debate. Some people would prefer a less straight-across look. I agree only to the point that it’s more flattering if the cut across the foot is not so straight, with insets at the edges or extra detailing to break up the line. I like them as an understated complement to anything from a dress (worn the day before finishing the review, but got no pic) to pants, on both bad days and good.

I think it would be great if they came out with some alternate models in the future that are more adorned and cut differently to match different tastes (perhaps a little more inset at the sides and a decorative tie crossing the top), but this is an excellent introduction for a line that delivers on barefoot goodness. Currently, they’re likely to appeal more to men than women as styles similar to this exist in the luxury market for men, such as these Nisolo’s with a terrible toe box.

Fit

The Khussa model from FeetSutra comes in both women’s and men’s sizing, with a margin of overlap in the middle that covers most sizes. The women’s sizing is more medium in width, while the men’s is wide, and wide at all points, heels included. On my larger foot, a hidden Injinji sock is filling up the space perfectly, but on my smaller/more narrow foot it is still not enough.

No matter which way you go, one thing is consistent: they are high volume. So much so, that I’m going to have to insole mine for long-term wear, and that’s so rare for me. But one of the critical aspects of barefoot shoes is that they be secure, and if your shoes are loose and, especially if you find your toes moving to keep them on, then do what you must to get a secure fit or move on from them. Some product options are here for insoles, felt pads, and more. I think I’m probably going to put in Nabosos myself, as I have some already, and I’d like to wear these barefoot (no socks) which is when Nabosos can shine for maximum sensation.

Sizing

FeetSutra has put out very detailed sizing charts, and I love it!

The women’s runs from US 6-11:

And the men’s from US 7-13:

It includes lengths, which run accurate against the chart using a Plus 12 device and measuring from the center of the heel to the center of the front of the shoe. My men’s 11s are 27.7 cm inside, as promised.

I generally target 28 cm, so was leery of going down below that, but the toe box is very rounded and I have zero danger of impeding my big toes with less than 12 mm. I’d hazard to say that due to the softness of the leather and the great shape for my feet, I may have even been able to go down further, but I can’t recommend that in general as it’s bad to hit the end of your shoes when you walk and your feet naturally move forward inside your shoes.

As mentioned above, the widths are different between the men’s and women’s and that’s awesome because we have choice. Not everyone even in the barefoot shoes market wants or needs extra wide shoes. Narrow-footed people can have just as much difficulty as those of us with wide feet in finding good shoes because they need to be secure.

There’s so much cross-over in wearers of zero-drop shoes that I’d love for them to just drop the gendering, or at the very least, extend it a little further. There are people at the top end of women’s sizing who have narrow feet and could use longer options, and there are women with petite feet that are very wide, and they could use smaller wide options. I hope FeetSutra will extend their lines in the future to fully capture both medium and wide widths.

How do they feel?

First thoughts: amazing! I can’t convey how light and barefoot these shoes are. They are 100% unrestrictive. But, they need to be secure, which may require adding something, which then takes away from that amazing level of barefooted-ness a bit, when you add materials like insoles, heel grips, or felt pads.

That black piece is the form they sent it with. Oops. But I like the pic, so it stays.

The extra volume comes with a great perk, though, in that I can put them on in just a couple of seconds and don’t need my hands at all. They are so light because the leather is thin and soft, but they are well-constructed to hold their shape, so they don’t collapse or sink, but slide right on and off you go.

Just be prepared that unless you have the highest and widest of feet, you may need some helper material.

They are incredibly easy to fold and twist with no resistance at all, which means, of course, your feet don’t fight them at either.

Cleaning and Care

These are a genuine leather shoe, and can be cared for accordingly. Do not use harsh brushes on them or you will damage the leather, but they can be polished, waxed, and protected with products appropriate for smooth leather. Options here.

Purchasing, Shipping, and Returns

FeetSutra ships worldwide and has a 30 day return/refund policy. You must reach out to them first. The full policies are here.

The Khussa model is priced at $129 for all sizes and includes free shipping for US customers for sure, but you may need to pay international shipping charges. You can save 10% with my affiliate discount code, however, and use OWBSHOES to bring the cost down to $116.10.

Final Thoughts

There are some pluses and negatives listed here, absolutely, but when you weigh the balance of “Would you give them up?” I don’t hesitate to say that no, I would not give them up. I love how they feel and how easily they work for a wide range of outfits. These feel like the start of something great for the barefoot shoes market, and that FeetSutra can continue to grow from here to be sought-after as ultimate barefoot shoes that feel like foot luxury, with different styles and materials that set them apart. I’m happy to wear these and excited to see them continue to grow in the market.

  1. HI, Wendy. I just discovered your wonderful site. If I were an actress, you could be my foot double, although my feet are slightly wider, even, than yours.

I appreciate the depth and detail of your reviews; they give me a good idea of whether a shoe will work for me or not, much more so than any information that the shoemakers ever provide. I can tell, for example, that this shoe would fit me pretty well except at the toes (not splayed enough). But since I already have a similar shoe custom-fit for me by The Drifter Leather, I have no need to compromise.

The model is called a “slip-on sneaker.” I have it in spice suede, which is gorgeous, and in black matte leather, which is my go-to slip-on for quick exits. Since they are custom-made for me, they hug my feet securely without pinching anywhere (they have a nice padded piece around the back of the heel). Drifter already has your measurements, so it would be easy to order them next time you can slip through one of their windows!

    • The slip-on sneaker from Drifter looks so comfy! Good to know that it works well. I’m glad to help, and always extra glad to help my large-foot comadres 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
